Weekend RoundUp: Linux Loses a Feature to a Feud

One anticipated upgrade is stalled, and not for technical reasons

Hey there,

Happy Friday🥳!

You may have noticed a short pause in our regular updates.

That’s because we were focused on two incredible community events: Open Source Community Africa (OSCA) Festival, co-located with Kubernetes Community Days (KCD) Nigeria.

After more than two years of planning, the very first in-person KCD Nigeria finally became a reality! The energy was incredible, and the event demonstrated the significant impact a passionate community can have. Looking ahead, the vision is even bigger, with plans for KubeCon Africa on the horizon, and continued efforts to shape the future of open source in Africa.

OSCAFEST 2025

With that, we’re back and excited to bring you more consistent updates again with stories, insights, and opportunities.

📰Top Picks:

New Amazon EC2 R8i & R8i-flex
AWS just dropped their 8th-gen memory-optimized instances. Great for databases, caching, analytics, even AI/ML. R8i scales way up (384 vCPUs, 3TB RAM), while R8i-flex gives you a cheaper option if you don’t max out compute. Read here.

Linux Loses a Feature to a Feud
The first release candidate of Linux 6.17 is here, but bcachefs didn’t make it in. Not because of bugs, but because of a messy personality clash among kernel developers. What could have been Linux’s next big filesystem upgrade is now stalled over people problems instead of code. Read here.

Open Source Meets the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act
The EU’s new Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) sets tough security rules for digital products, with steep penalties for manufacturers and distributors. While most open source developers won’t be directly liable, their projects may face new pressures as companies demand stronger security practices. What does this mean for the open source world? Read here.

What lies ahead for Python developers
Over 30,000 devs weighed in this year, and the results show big shifts. Half the community has less than two years’ experience. Python is now used more for data than anything else. Read here.
